Coal, Community and the Reef

The Reef at Risk, Boom Goes the Reef, Coal is Killing Communities………..

These are the sensational headlines we see at the moment, is it just “greenies gone mad” or is our iconic Great Barrier Reef really at Risk?

UNESCO thinks so.  So much so, that they have threatened to place the World Heritage listing of the Great Barrier Reef “at risk” unless the Australian government moves to action UNESCO’s strongly worded recommendations.

The coordinator of a Central Queensland community group, thinks so. Their local beautiful turquoise blue Keppel Bay and the Fitzroy River delta at the head of that bay, (the largest estuarine ecosystem feeding into the Great Barrier Reef), are threatened with massive coal port developments. www.protectkeppelbay.org

The operator of an eco tourism retreat on an island in those pristine waters of Keppel Bay, thinks so. She grew up in a once picturesque location now destroyed by a massive coal port, moved to an idyllic island only to find the threat of coal ports at her door step again.

The renowned author of “Rich Land, Wasteland”, Sharyn Munro thinks so.  Her extraordinary book exposes the real story of coal: how people are hurting, and rebelling, as coal pushes into hitherto unthinkable areas; how the true costs outweigh any benefits; and how all of us will ultimately pay the price.

Make up your own mind, meet these three woman and hear three aspects of this critical issue facing Australia and Australians.
